Lance took this while laying on the ground. You can see the different stonework line about 1/3 from the bottom, where work on the monument took a "hiatus" for a period. The monument has a fascinating history all it's own recorded in a text-rich paper here: http://www.nps.gov/wamo/history/. I shuddered with fear when Lance told me of the observation deck atop the monument....bad memories of going up the St. Louis Arch....eeiiiiiuhhhhelp.
The pillars are arranged in order of entry into the Union so MN and WI are next to each other. Despite the lack of awe to this monument, the design encourages people to congregate in a way unlike the other monuments, due to the state designation and circular design with pool in the middle. People watching is fascinating... I could spend all day photographing here.
